My first sewing project.....

We've been poorly in our house this week. A virus has been hitting us all just like a bowling ball on skittles and its only Mr Vintage who's still going strong. So while I lay in bed I thought I'd do a draft blog and suddenly I've perked up. I have 15 followers, how on earth did that happen? How lovely. If this continues I may have to do a giveaway. I love entering them (never win sadly) so I'd love to do one. So thankyou for taking the time to add me.

I recieved these this week from the lovely Mitmot, from Shabby Chic cafe. If you get the chance come on over, lots of friendly chatter and always someone willing to help or give advice on just about anything, sewing, knitting, painting furniture and life in general.

In between mopping children's heads and dispensing calpol I managed to make this......

It's a cot quilt for DD3. I made it from a single patchwork duvet cover from Argos that was pretty cheap and added some wadding. I cut out three hearts from the patchwork side of the quilt and after bonding them on I machine sewed them in place. The stitching is wobbly, the seams aren't straight and I think the hearts are slightly wonky but I adore it. This is the first proper thing I have made since I left school and I have loads of material left over so I want to make a cot tidy and bunting. I didn't realise how enjoyable sewing could be and how quick it is to make something. I'm so nervous putting my foot to the pedal but I'm not as hard on myself as I used to be when I was younger - I just think what the heck, she's 6 months old it's not as if DD3 will even notice the wonky stitching lol.

DD2 has just come in she's having a nightmare but funnily enough hasn't even gone to sleep yet, mmmm I think someone wants attention, so ttfn. Sweet dreams x

Surprise in the loft

I'm a bit of a hoarder and shove lots of things I think might come in handy into the loft - the result being that we simply could't get up there any more. So taking BIG breaths on saturday we braved the boxes, bags, old christmas trees (four !!!) and huge hanging cobwebs and made a start. It took all afternoon, two trips to the dump and charity shop but look what I found.......

It's a hand crocheted granny squared blanket for a single bed. It's so lovely and blooming heavy! Sadly there is a small hole in one of the squares but some lovely ladies over at Shabby Chic Cafe have offered a replacement. I'm always amazed just how generous people can be and I am so pleased to be part of a lovely blogging community. Middle daughter has asked if she can have it and of course she can. She doesn't know it yet but one of my projects this year is to completely revamp her bedroom. Sadly she's growing out of disney princess so I'm going to indulge my inner vintage.

Green & Blacks Official Chocolate taster !

If I had to come up with a list of dream jobs they would probaby rank in order as :

Working at Cath Kidston (especially since I found out she gives her staff £800 to spend in the store each year- so now she's talented and generous)

Personal bodyguard for the hot guy from Glee - Mark Salling - Actually think he may shoot up to 1.

Well following a lovely request from GreenandBlacks, the organic chocolate company I got to try the chocolate tasting bit and it's not all it's cracked up to be ! You really can have too much of a good thing.

I was sent 8 bars to taste and review, so deciding to get all official and not scoff the lot in one go I rounded up a couple of good friends and over coffee and a chat we sniffed, looked and melted chocolate slowly in our mouths ( how hard was that to do).

It was so much fun, the chocolate came with an information sheet on the best way to taste chocolate and it seems my lifelong method of unwrapping and scoffing the lot as quickly as possible isn't right - who knew ?

hold your nose and allow the small piece of choclate to melt in the mouth, finally let go of your nose and taste all the flavours........

I still have lots of chocolate left, so in part 2, I'm going to blog some more pictures and results of what we tasted and what we liked.

Cath Kidston bags at last !!

Went to visit my lovely sister in Plymouth for a few days at the weekend but weather was atrocious so we stayed indoors drinking lots of hot chocolate and chatting on the sofa, but forget the weather the best bit was this little lot.

They are the Cath Kidston bags for Tesco that were brough out last summer. Not too sure how many she did in the collection, but I love these. Too gorgeous to put away so I've already filled one with my knitting. The others will be filled with crochet projects (if I ever learn) and sewing.

Took a lovely walk with the girls at Black Park last week. It was freezing with ice and frost everywhere but it looked gorgeous. We took a long leisurely walk around the lake, played in the park and finished off with a hot chocolate at the cafe. It's well worth a visit.

Bargains and birthdays !

Christmas has only just gone and now we have two birthdays coming up. DD1 will be 25 and DS2 is going to be 15, where did the time go? I know it's a cliche but it really does seem like yesterday when they were as small and vulnerable as DD3 who is now almost 6 months and is just adorable.

Eldest daughter is so easy to buy for, I'm making a gift basket filled with lots of pink goodies, it's almost finished and can't wait to show it off. But my 15 year old !!! Apparently I'm not fashionable enough to be trusted to actually buy his presents. Uhuh I just have to pay for them and let his older brother buy them. Oh if only they knew how trendy mum used to be in her hot - pants, conical bra and dm's. Beneath this exterior of shabby chic, charity shops and knitting lies that 80's Acid House raver just waiting to burst back out.

Talking of charity shops had a lovely day today shopping with my 84 year old Nan! She's so young at heart, so after a lovely lunch we hit the shops.

We went to six different Charity Shops and not sure if it's a local thing, but they all looked so alike and not many original bargains to be had. I got all these lovely linens and knitting needles from the same shop but the others tended to be bit overpriced. So still on the lookout for embroidered goodies and I want to turn them into something gorgeous like this. Have a look, it's from a great blog and even better she's having a fab giveaway.

This is my youngest Vintage, all of 6 months and pictured here desperately trying to eat the camera strap! I'd love some advice on taking good photos for blogs or some good camera recommendations. I think pictures really help a blog to flow so now I take mine everywhere with me.

I had comments on my last post and it really cheers me up to think people actually stop by and read my blog. So thankyou posters. And yes, the Cath Kidston washing up liquid label is paper, so why not do what I do, just leave it out for show! Only joking, I put it in my wardrobe out of the way - with two strapping teens and a hubby who haven't quite grabbed the idea of having things for 'best' I daren't leave it out.

Why are other people's blogs so much better than mine ?

It's not a complaint (honest) but sometimes I seem to spend so many hours trawling blog land and come back here and think, 'how do they do it?' There are some super talented bloggers and a couple of my faves are Countryheartandhome, lots to see on this one including recipes, crafty makes and doing up a home. happylovesrosie is another gorgeous blog - pictures galore and really friendly. Ooops looks like my New Years Resolution to stop bloogling (the art of blog drooling !) has gone out the window.

What's this I hear you ask? Well after lots and lots of hints to family at Christmas, they stopped buying me books I'll never read and bubblebath I will never use and instead treated me to some lovely Cath Kidston and I thought I'd share. The kitchen cleaner smells divine just like fresh cotton sheets and the garden gloves are bright and cheerful - only problem with the gloves? Well, they are so gorgeous I don't want to spoil them and actually wear them to do gardening. Think I'll have to get some cheapo ones.

This was a little gift from my lovely Nan. The box is tatty but the gorgeous dainty pastry forks inside have never been used, but they are tiny! Not sure how much patience I would have faced with a split cream donut but they are divine.

DD3 is a poorly little baby at the moment so not much time for crafting, just lots of cuddles.

Warning - bad karma alert!

Mmmm what can I say - I wanted to tell you about all the lovely goodies I have made but instead it's been a miserable day.

My car wouldn't start so had to be towed to the Garage £45

Sockets kept blowing in the utility room so had to call the Electrician who thankfully is a friends husband, hate to think what it would cost if I got him from Yellow Pages £20

Husbands car window wipers broken so had to get DD2 and DD3 back out of car

Sockets blew again so called Electrician back out £ 0

Husband fixed wipers, got DD's and all their bits and bobs in car, wipers broke at end of road !

Pot of bright orange baby food exploded in baby bag covering EVERYTHING in gunge.

Sandwich toaster broke but only after I had made everyone a gorgeous sandwich and only me left to do.

Garage called - car won't be back till next week. £200

Don't think I have had so many things go so wrong in one day.

I did say in my last post that I was going to be super good and make a dress for DD3 but I really want it to look nice so instead I have been practicing my sewing skills by making a simple fleece hat.

Really simple to make from a fleece scarf that only cost £2.

Measure babies head, add 1/2 inch for seam allowance. Cut panel of fabric that's the width of babies head x 10 inches. Sew up small sides to make a tube. Sew up top of hat. Turn right side out. Turn up 3 inches and either hand or machine sew in place. Voila all done. I am going to add some pompoms to the outer corners just to finish it all off. Happy to put step by step pictures up if anyone wants them. Tomorrow I'm going to finish some bitty bootees I started in felt and make a Gnome hat.

I'm Back !

Ok this is it - I promise (hand on heart ) that this year will be the year of the blog ! Just don't know why I am so terrible at this writing lark, I kept a diary when I was younger for years and years and I simply love to talk so need to be focused. No more blog hopping for me and day dreaming 'why can't I do that' nope that's it. Had a sharp talk to myself (well ok did't really talk to myself because I think that's just plain daft - apologies to any selftalkers out there) and blogging as often as possible is one of this years resolutions. Here are some others :

1. Blog more (great started on that one already)
2. Stop pretending I don't eat chocolate (I do - my Gran belongs to the Mars retirement club and gets LOADS of freebies). That one's going well as I had a Lions Bar last night !
3. Stop moaning about having no money - nobody does at the moment and it bores people.
4. Wipe the drool off the pc and actually start to decorate/sew/embroider instead of being jealous of others who do.

There = not many and I think all achievable.

Just like rest of the UK it's been snowing here and I LOVE IT ! It makes everything so clean looking and so fresh and reminds of how I think Winter should be.

Made some snow angels with DD 2, then DD3 was freezing so after taking her back inside we all had a snowball fight, but being as highly competitive as I am I decided to get all humphy and say I'm not playing any more. Hour later had a text from a neighbour (who used to be my SIL so that's ok) who asked if I'd had fun in the snow. I somehow seemed to forget that I live in a cul-de-sac with neighbours!!!

Hope you all had a great Christmas, I did. Last year was a complete non-starter due to illness but this year was much better. Here's DD3 wearing her Christmas outfits.

Biased I know but I think she is adorable

DD1 bought me a gorgeous sewing machine a couple of years ago and it's been gathering dust but I bought these for DD3 and am going to make a start on the first one today. Haven't sewed anything since home economic classes at my all girls school in the 80's so wish me luck. So have bought a couple of patterns to get me started ----

I belong to a few forums and newest one I've found is British Mummy bloggers . I haven't set up a home page yet and just finding my way around but the number bloggers is huge. Joined the reviewers page just before Christmas and already been asked to review Green & Blacks chocolate . I hummed and hahed - should I? Oh well someone has to taste and then comment on chocolate so it may as well be me! Not really - I can't wait, eating chocolate and then writing about it how hard can it be? Will let you know xx

Time is flying by ................

After promising myself that I would be ever so good and blog at least once a week, I've failed already! I don't know if the weeks fly by because I'm getting older or just because I am so busy but whatever the reason I wish life would just slow down ever so slightly. It's been a week of coughs, colds and tonsilitis in our house and it's not the baby keeping me up it's the noise from the older children. Yes, I know they can't help it but .......

Had the most gorgeous gift last week from my friend Alison's mum. She is a fantastic knitter and knitted lots of little white cardigans but now she knows I have a girl she has been churning out these -

These are just 3 out of the 6 she knitted this month. I so wish I could knit as quick and as well. She won't even let me buy the wool to say thankyou so need to think of something nice instead.

Talking of my little girl she is just adorable (biased I know) and has the most eatable cheeks, in fact they are HUGE. Her Dad calls her squirrel for obvious reasons.

And finally .....

My hubby has been running for six months now and did his first 'proper' race today and guess what ? He came 7th out of 72 !!! I haven't been taking his running seriously to be honest in fact it just annoys me when he comes in at 7 am all sweaty and I do moan loads, but I am very proud of him. He wants to build up to half marathon and then who knows he may even do the full one. Here he is ....

Freecycle goodies and scrummy books

I have been a freecycle member for a couple of years now but haven't really asked for anything and only posted a few things but this month I have been very lucky. Our tumble dryer suddenly went without warning. With four children and winter coming all I could think of was heaps of drying clothes hung over radiators ! Not good - but a lovely freecycler emigrating to Australia donated an almost new tumble dryer. A lovely lady gave me some baby clothes and then this was posted .....

My 8yr old loves it and I can't believe after 35years it still has lots of original furniture including a lovely avodado bath mmmmm but also the carpet sweeper and Hoover in the shot above. I had to explain just what a carpet sweeper actually does and then I remembered my Nan still has one which she still uses. Funny how things today just don't seem to last yet her carpet sweeper must be at least 40 years old !

Also popped in to the charity shop again and someone has obviously been clearing their bookcase because I picked up these...

The book is by Mary Berry who I think is a great cookbook writer.

I've tried cooking Chinese food and love it so hoping to make something bit different than the usual sweet and sour chicken.

Not sure if you can really see this but it's a recipe book that follows the seasons and gives a recipe for each day of the year. They look really easy to follow and don't have bizarre or hard to buy ingredients like some books do.

Thats the bargains for now, still have to let you know about my disastrous fridge cake ! How a fridge cake can go wrong is beyond me but I managed to do it. My sister gave me a lovely recipe that involved Belgian chocolate, double cream, marshmallows and digestives. But I didnt have all the ingredients and used cake covering, no cream, oddly dry marshmallows and chocolate digestives that were getting soft. Heres the picture it looks lovely but my word it was horrid. Even the kids who love chocolate cake wouldnt eat it and more than half sadly went in the bin.

Ok then its off to make Tuna and tomato risotto - that's one recipe I know I can do without mistakes. Bye for now

Bargain hunting !

It's been a great start to the week ( apart from the weather lol). Found some lovely bargains in some local Charity Shops. Met some nice people via Freecycle and one of my closest friends has gone back to work this week after almost 10 years at home raising children to work with the elderly and she loves it. I am so pleased for her as she was a bag of nerves beforehand. It's made me think more of the future and I am more determined than ever to open the little artsy craftsy shop I dream of! But for now I am just loving being at home with my little gorgeous girl.

Here are some of my charity shop finds..........................

this is a small posy dish (20p)

a lovely shaped dish just perfect for soap (40p)

I found two of these hand-crochet place mats (?),any way they will be made into cushions. I was thinking of using a duck egg blue material with the cream crochet on top. (20p for both)

this is the corner of a large square of hand embroidered linen table cloth (20p). I just don't know where to put it yet but it is so so lovely. I did think about putting it on the back of the sofa but my Nan still does that and she is in her 80's so love my Nan but want to try something else. I have seen some of these types of embroidery turned into cushions or lavender bags on Shabby Chic Cafe but am not sure if I should cut it up. Will just have to add it to my growing pile of WAS (wait and see ! )

Little one is sleeping now so it's off to tackle my ironing mountain and throw away my disastrous chocolate finger flan that even the kids won't eat. xxx

It's been a YEAR !

I can't believe it's been a whole year since I last updated my blog, where on earth has the time gone? But I have been busy and above is one I made earlier lol. This is Genevieve born 4th August and she is adorable.

I didn't have the best pregnancy and the most traumatic birth ever when we thought we had lost her but now she is here she is just so scrummy.

Just starting to feel normal now so I am resolving to be a good blogger and updating once a week !

Where has time flown? I just spotted 4 comments following my last blog and it is such a buzz when that happens - so thank you and thank you again for letting me know how to add links. I wish I had read the comment about light sanding - think I may just have to live with the brush marks on top of my desk and if I keep the lights low I'm sure nobody else will notice either.

Have finally finished painting the desk and thought I would post a piccy of all the other carboot bargains I picked up at our local carboot. It is huge and I have never managed to get all the way round - I get bored by about row 8 and usually buy a greasy hamburger and sit in the car reading whatever new book I have bought until husband/sister/daughter joins me. Does anyone else struggle with all their bargains and will it be terribly old ladyish if I bought a shopping trolley 40 years earlier than most shopping trolley ladies???? My sister/daughter have both threatened to never shop with me again if I do but I must investigate if CK sells one.

Here we have a little chest that hangs on the wall but not sure if I am going to paint it or just change the knobs to little china ones. Any suggestions? This one cost me £1.oo It isn't as orange as it looks in the photo.
These were from left to right 50p, 20p and £1.00. The heart shelves are going to be painted white and put in my little girls room, the one in the middle (to be painted and stencilled) will go in my room above my newly painted desk and hold all the little knick knacks that I seem to pick up just like a magpie and the one on the right I simply love and not sure where to put it.

And finally we have this - mmmm
It's hard to see but this is a magazine holder (50p) with different paintings either side (but I think they are just prints not really painted). I was thinking of distressing it (which I have never done I may add) and putting some duck eggy wallpaper in front of the prints. Just in case someone 'spots' it and tells me I am covering up a 17C masterpiece ! I am going to use this in my room for all my papers and ideal home magazines.

Children are all much better and back at school so it has been lovely catching up with the ironing, which frankly was not so much of a pile but a mountain - literally. It has taken me nearly a week to get through it, why do kids get their clothes so dirty? And why do teenage boys have to spray an entire can of Lynx when they are about to go to school? I pity their poor teachers if all boys are like that - the peculiar mix of Lynx and football socks UGH !

And finally I don't think I mentioned I have a new kitten who was bought to replace my cat who died last year (Marmite RIP) my cat ws 21 years old so I was very upset. So welcome Nibbles, for some unfathomable reason my husband keeps calling him Torres but luckily being smart he answers to both. TTFN x

Where has the week gone ?

September is flying by and can hardly believe it's been over a week since my last blog.
Have been very busy this week and have had some good things some bad. The bad first - two of the children have been very poorly with chest infections and youngest had a burst eardrum. Sounds much worse than it is, she was fine once it had burst as the pain ebbed away. But think my Florence Nightingale image is now seriously dented after a week of 5am shouts of ' mum, my throat still hurts - can I watch Hannah Montanna'. Mmm I think she is better now and its off to school tomorrow.

Good news - it has been a great week for bargains. Since joining the Shabby Chic Cafe I have been so inspired and the house is filled with bargains and paint pot samples and sand paper!

Picked up a lovely pine desk from freecycle (its just had its 1st coat of paint so will upload when its completely finished.

this is going in my bedroom as I really need to be organised.

Other bargains came from the carboot. It's a really huge carboot but normally there are just loads and loads of mums selling baby stuff, which was great 7 years ago but I really never want to see another tommi tippe nappy squidgee thing. The gorgeous clock below was bought by my eldest daughter and she gave it to me when we got out of the car - so pleased as she's a uni student not on much money so was very thoughtful. I am not dwelling onthe £20 I 'lent' her to actually go to the carboot as it's the thought that counts. Will take pics of the rest of the stuff over next couple of days and post. Just busy busy at the moment sanding and painting. Am struggling to get a good finish so going to ask the experts at the Cafe how to get rid of paint lines.
If anyone knows how to add weblinks in the blog please let me know. I have come across some beautiful inspirational blogs and would love to share them .

Haven't been on all week as I have bronchitis (boo!) still in bed now so a belated thank you for all the lovely welcomes (hugs back to everyone). It has cheered me seeing your lovely comments, wasn't sure anyone had stopped by so a big THANK YOU .

Apart from feeling poorly it has felt very odd at home this week, I have been so used to children around me that the house feels very quiet. So no excuses now - I can get on with all the things I promised I would do when the children were older. So for any mums out there tearing their hair out believe me they are at school so quickly you really do miss it.

First things first is to get the business running more professionally, I love all the making things and face painting but stall at paperwork and websites. Am going to buy a website maker this week as there must be an easypeasy way to do it.

My first project next weekish is to create a Princess Throne, not very shabby chic but this time it will be gold with purple or gold net skirt. Just on the lookout now for an old wooden chair that's small enough for children to sit on. The Throne will be used at the end of a red carpet for my princess parties, hopefully good for photos as well.

Had a party on Tuesday for 20 Children and couldn't get anyone to cover - it's not easy playing Duck Duck Goose in a large hall with lots of little ones and hardly any voice ! They were adorable though and 4 to 5 year olds are just so grateful for anything. I had a terrible moment when I completely and utterly forgot what a Rabbit looked like and was asked to paint the birthday girl first ! She was so sweet though and said 'it's perfect'. Wish they were all like that.

Promise to put pictures on from next week (it must get terribly boring just reading my Blog).

Huge Change

Lots of changes at home. My youngest son who has been home educated for 4 years has decided he wants to go back to school. Once he decided it all happened very very quickly. We applied at the end of the last term, had a call on thursday and he started friday. We spent a frantic hour running to the very expensive school shop and spent a fortune buying a new uniform. He started school friday and seems to like it.

Have been looking at other blogs who hold pink fridays/craft mondays and want to add something. Now all the children are at school maybe I can have some more free time. First time in 23 years I haven't had a child at home, I won't know what to do with myself.

Bought some beautiful fairy wings for my party business, just have to get the website up and running = it's so annoying not knowing how to do things like change my website or blog. I will have to go on a course.

Have had lovely few days looking at other people's blogs - thankyou for the nice welcomes !

The children are back to school in a couple of days, the summer has just flown by. It's such a shame the weather has been so awful but we had a lovely day at my friend, Sasha's house. She has promised to lend me her garden which is just beautiful so that i can take some photo's for my website. (I run a children's party planning business).

I also home educate one of my children and am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

Am still trying to work out how to change the look of my blog so that it seems much more 'vintage' so watch this space

My very first post - yes

This is my very first post on Viki Vintage and its just to say hi.

Feeling very happy as I love all things shabby chic - Rachel Ashwell, Cath Kidston & Laura Ashley but I can only indulge my passion on a part time basis (Simon) prefers a much more contemporary house - everything put away nothing on show that sort of thing - so my bits and pieces are relagated to the bedroom.

I love customising new bits with old bits and will show some piccys in the next few days
